“The Mini Show” art show will raise money for the Mini Lai Scholarship fund, given out once a year to an Art Center Illustration student with financial hardship. Most of you may know Mini Lai, a wonderful friend who went through the Illustration program with many of us. For those of you that were not blessed to know Mini, this is a great opportunity to give back to your alma mater and help ACCD illustration students continue their studies. We’re going to promote the show as a big event with art, food, and music in a very cool venue. Toyota has already sign on to sponsor the show and we are going to approach other corporations and local busnesses to help as well. It should be a fun night! We would like you to be involved in this art show. Go to www.minilai.com to learn more about the fund and the show. 1. We are inviting you and any of your Illustration alumni friends to donate art pieces for the show, as many as you like. 2. The artwork will be collected between now and September 25th. We need to collect artwork early for promotional purposes (exception will be made for artists creating art for the show). 3. Artwork can be existing or new, but must be ready to hang. The goal of the show is to offer affordably-priced art, from about $80 to $300. The art piece should have a value within this price range. 100% of the sale would go towards the fund (Your donation of artwork is tax deductible. Please consult your tax advisor). This would be a great way to be a part of a group art show without doing too much work, get some publicity for yourselves, while giving to a good cause! For details on the submission process visit the Upcoming Events page at http://minilai.com/upcoming.html If you are interested let me know ASAP so I can determine an initial count of participating artists, and find out if we need to open the submission call to other alumni. Spread the word and thanks, Brian Damitz

Jean-Léon Gérôme paintings at the Getty

The Spectacular Art of Jean-Léon Gérôme

File:Jean-Leon Gerome Pollice Verso.jpg

Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) was among the most officially honored and financially successful French artists of the second half of the 19th century. His brilliantly painted and often provocative pictures were at the center of heated debates over the present and future of the great French painting tradition. Reproduced using brand new photomechanical processes and dispersed across Europe and America, Gérôme’s images indelibly marked the popular imagination, directly influencing spectacular forms of mass entertainment, from theater to film.

Through most of the 20th century, however, Gérôme’s critical reputation was tarnished by his alleged commercialism and his stubborn opposition to the triumphant avant-garde movements of Impressionism and Postimpressionism. The first comprehensive exhibition of his work in almost 40 years, this exhibition offers the opportunity to reconsider the variety and complexity of Gérôme’s masterful oeuvre.

The exhibition brings together works that span Gérôme’s entire career, from his early “Néo-Grec” paintings with their lighthearted take on classical antiquity, to his wide variety of historical scenes that still impress with their dramatic realism. A core group of Gérôme’s Orientalist genre paintings are also on view. These paintings were inspired by the people and architecture he saw on his many voyages, beginning in the late 1850s, to Egypt, the Holy Land, and Asia Minor. Late in life, Gérôme shifted his focus to sculpture, conducting innovative experiments with polychromy that were informed by the latest archeological knowledge of antique sculpture. Although derided by critics, Gérôme’s colorful, ornate statues—key examples of which are included in the exhibition—were popular among collectors, for whom he had them reproduced in a variety of sizes and materials.

This exhibition is organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, and the Réunion des musées nationaux, Paris, in association with the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid. The exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
